Electoral roll revision sees sharp rise in young voters and improved gender ratio across the state.

In a significant development ahead of future electoral exercises, Uttar Pradesh has recorded a massive increase of over 84 lakh voters following the completion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The updated voter list, released on Friday, reflects a total electorate of 13.39 crore, marking a substantial expansion in the state’s democratic base.

The revision exercise, which spanned over five months, has not only increased the total number of voters but also highlighted a notable surge in youth participation and an improvement in gender representation.

Electorate Expands to 13.39 Crore After Revision Drive

According to Navdeep Rinwa, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) was conducted from October 27, 2025, to April 10, 2026, covering all 75 districts and 403 assembly constituencies in the state.

The final electoral roll shows that the total number of registered voters has reached 13,39,84,792, compared to 12,55,56,025 in the draft roll published earlier in January 2026.

This marks an overall increase of 84,28,767 voters, underscoring the scale and effectiveness of the revision exercise.

Youth Voter Participation Sees Sharp Increase

One of the most significant highlights of the revision process is the substantial rise in young voters, particularly in the 18–19 age group.

The number of voters in this category increased from 3,33,981 in the draft roll to 17,63,360 in the final list. This represents an addition of over 14 lakh young voters, accounting for approximately 1.32% of the total electorate.

The surge reflects increased awareness and participation among first-time voters, driven by extensive outreach campaigns and digital engagement initiatives.

Officials noted that encouraging youth participation remains a key priority, as it strengthens democratic processes and ensures broader representation.

Gender Ratio Shows Noticeable Improvement

The updated electoral roll also indicates progress in gender representation. The gender ratio improved from 824 female voters per 1,000 male voters in the draft roll to 834 per 1,000 in the final list.

In absolute numbers:

  • Male Voters: 7,30,71,071 (approximately 54%)
  • Female Voters: 6,09,09,525 (approximately 45.46%)
  • Third Gender Voters: 4,206

The increase includes the addition of over 42 lakh male voters and 42 lakh female voters, along with a small but notable rise in third-gender registrations.

This improvement highlights ongoing efforts to ensure inclusive voter registration across different segments of society.

Massive Administrative Effort Behind the Revision

The Special Intensive Revision was a large-scale administrative exercise involving extensive coordination across multiple levels of the election machinery.

The process was carried out with the support of:

  • 75 District Election Officers (DEOs)
  • 403 Electoral Registration Officers (EROs)
  • 12,758 Assistant EROs
  • 18,026 BLO Supervisors
  • 1,77,516 Booth Level Officers (BLOs)

Additionally, over 5.8 lakh booth-level agents from recognized political parties contributed to the exercise, ensuring transparency and accuracy.

Officials emphasized that the collaborative approach played a crucial role in the successful completion of the revision.

Key Districts Lead Voter Growth

Several districts in Uttar Pradesh recorded significant increases in voter numbers during the revision process.

Among the top contributors:

  • Prayagraj recorded the highest increase with over 3.29 lakh new voters
  • Lucknow added nearly 2.85 lakh voters
  • Bareilly saw an increase of around 2.57 lakh voters
  • Ghaziabad registered 2.43 lakh new voters
  • Jaunpur added over 2.37 lakh voters

These figures highlight the widespread impact of the revision exercise across both urban and semi-urban regions.

Role of Media and Awareness Campaigns

Officials credited the success of the voter list revision to extensive awareness campaigns conducted through multiple platforms.

Print, electronic, and digital media played a crucial role in informing citizens about the revision process and encouraging them to register or update their details.

Special drives targeting young voters, women, and underrepresented groups were also carried out to ensure broader participation.

The use of technology and digital platforms further streamlined the process, making it easier for voters to access services and complete registrations.

Strengthening Democratic Participation

The increase in voter numbers is seen as a positive indicator of strengthening democratic participation in the state.

A larger electorate not only enhances the legitimacy of elections but also ensures that a wider cross-section of society is represented in the democratic process.

Election officials noted that continuous efforts are being made to maintain accurate and updated voter lists, which are essential for free and fair elections.

The inclusion of more young voters is particularly significant, as it brings new perspectives and energy into the electoral process.

Challenges and the Way Forward

Despite the success of the revision exercise, officials acknowledged that challenges remain in ensuring complete and accurate voter registration.

Issues such as migration, duplication of entries, and verification of voter details require ongoing attention.

Future efforts will focus on leveraging technology, improving data accuracy, and conducting regular awareness campaigns to address these challenges.

Election authorities also emphasized the importance of collaboration between government agencies, political parties, and citizens in maintaining the integrity of the electoral system.

A Significant Milestone for Uttar Pradesh’s Electoral Landscape

The addition of over 84 lakh voters marks a major milestone in the electoral landscape of Uttar Pradesh. The surge in youth participation and improved gender ratio reflect positive trends in voter engagement and inclusivity.

The successful completion of the Special Intensive Revision highlights the effectiveness of coordinated efforts by election authorities, political stakeholders, and the public.

As the state moves forward, the expanded electorate is expected to play a crucial role in shaping its democratic future, reinforcing the importance of participation, representation, and transparency in the electoral process.
